CARRIER OPPORTUNITIES IN BIOLOGY
In many countries, the training for a carrier biology starts at the high school or college (senior secondary school
in Ghana) with courses in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. At the university,
the first two years of a 4-year undergraduate programme are spent on more advanced courses in the above mentioned courses
to establish a more solid science background for understanding the concepts of biological sciences. The last two years of
concept and applications include some research components which serves to introduce the graduate to research methodologies.
On successful completion, a bachelors degree is awarded in biology which is sufficient for starting positions in many
jobs which require just a graduate degree. However, the graduate is versatile enough to further train for either a higher
degree and / or qualifications in any of the several fields of biology. At highly professional levels, biologist research
into departmental issues in Agriculture, Medicine, Industry and Ecology.
Carrier opportunities exist at various levels for biologists in many government agencies responsible for sanitation,
public health, and water quality. Biologist can also work in the zoos and parks with the department of games and wild life
management. Very highly trained biologist of professorial level are the keepers of National/International museums housing
important systematic collections of biological specimens.
In addition, some companies and government agencies hire biologists to study the environmental effects of pollution
and proposed construction projects.
In conclusion, a bachelors degree in biology is a key to several doors leading into various fields of biology for a
carrier and not the epitome of the carrier. Therefore get further training in any of these fields of biology; Anatomy, Biochemistry,
Biophysics, Botany, Cryobiology, Cytology, Ecology, Embryology, Entomology, Ethnology, Evolutionary biology, Genetics, Ichthyology,
Limnology, Marine biology, Medicine, Microbiology, Molecular biology, Neurology, Neurobiology, Ornithology, Paleontology,
Pathology, Physiology, Sociobiology, Systematic, Virology and Zoology, and a door will open into a job opportunity.
